Don Elkins was born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1930. He held a BS and MS in mechanical engineering from the University of Louisville, as well as an MS in general engineering from Speed Scientific School. He was the founder and head of the University of Alaska’s mechanical engineering department in 1960-61, and was Professor of Physics and Engineering at the University of Louisville for twelve years from 1953-1965. In 1965 he left his position as tenured professor and became a Boeing 727 pilot for a major airline in order to devote himself more fully to UFO and paranormal research. He eventually became Captain and flew until his death in 1984. He also served with distinction in the U.S. Army as a Master Sergeant during the Korean War.
Before the organization was so named, Don began the work of L/L Research solo in 1955. Among his areas of focus, he used age-regression hypnosis to research reincarnation, talked with and visited UFO contactees all over the United States, often piloting his own small plane, investigated the many areas of paranormal study, and corresponded with and visited a wide variety of scholars, researchers, experiencers, abductees, and many others defying categorization throughout his very active career as a researcher. Don, along with his partner, Carla, published some of that UFO research in the book Secrets Of The UFO in 1976.
In 1962, Don began an experiment in channeling using the protocols he had learned from a contactee group in Detroit, Michigan. That experiment blossomed into what became the principal effort of L/L Research: to collect and share information for the spiritual advancement of all humankind. His experiment, as it were, continues in an unbroken line today through our weekly meditations where we work with both silent meditation and channeling.
The Law Of One material represents the crowning achievement of Don’s life and work, along with his other two research associates, Carla L. Rueckert and Jim McCarty.
Carla L. Rueckert (McCarty) was born in 1943 in Lake Forest, Illinois. She completed undergraduate studies in English Literature at the University of Louisville in 1966, and earned her master’s degree studies in Library Service in 1971. She served as librarian and bibliographer to college and school libraries for six years.
Carla was a meditator with the group Don started in early 1962, and became partners with Don in in 1968. In 1970, she turned full-time to assisting Don with his research and together they formed L/L Research. She read and abstracted books and periodicals, and did correspondence and writing for Don.
In 1974, she began channeling and continued unceasingly in that effort until she was stopped in 2011 by a spinal fusion surgery. During four of those thirty-seven years of channeling (1981 – 1984) Carla served as the instrument for the Ra Contact. In 1987, she married Jim McCarty and together they continued the mission of L/L Research with Carla at its helm. Carla passed into larger life on April 1, 2015.

James McCarty was born in 1947 in Kearney, Nebraska. After receiving an undergraduate degrees from the University of Nebraska at Kearney and a masters of science in Early Childhood Education from the University of Florida, Jim moved to a piece of wilderness in Marion County, Kentucky, in 1974 to build his own log cabin in the woods, and to develop a self-sufficient lifestyle. For the next six years, he was in almost complete retreat.
He founded the Rock Creek Research and Development Laboratories in 1977 to further his teaching efforts. After experimenting, Jim decided that he preferred the methods and directions he had found in studying with L/L Research in 1978. In 1980, he joined his research with Don’s and Carla’s and the legal entity that we are today comes from this joining of Jim’s non-profit charity, The Rock Creek Research and Development Laboratories, with L/L Research in 1982. We use Rock Creek as our legal name, and do business as L/L Research.
Jim and Carla were married in 1987. Jim has a wide L/L correspondence and creates wonderful gardens and stonework. He enjoys beauty, nature, dance, and silence.
Gary L Bean was born in the remote Ohio regions of North America eleven months before the start of the Ra Contact. He was very much asleep at the wheel the first 18 years of his life, until, in 1998, a book, seemingly accidentally stumbled upon, rang the figurative inner alarm clock. Fingerprints of the Gods, by Graham Hancock, blew the lid off the top. Suddenly the human story was greater and more mysterious than orthodox history allowed. Suddenly there were questions. Unbeknownst to him at the time, his spiritual journey had commenced.
In January, 2000 he found himself with streams of tears sitting at his computer reading the first sessions of The Law of One material online. Why it made such sense to him, he could not at the time say, but the deep emotional, intellectual, and visceral reaction was clear enough: he had found his philosophical home. Eventually, in an incredible evolution of events, a physical and spiritual home as well. In February, 2003, Carla and Jim invited Gary to join them, and soon thereafter packed his bags for Louisville, Kentucky, where he’s been firmly planted ever since.
Unable to keep up with the demands of her growing organization, and wanting to be freed up to focus on creative work, Carla created for Gary the new position of administrative assistant of L/L Research in 2005, and entrusted him with the responsibilities that would soon expand to include running and representing the organization. Three years later, he and L/L’s webmaster, Steve E., built Brign4th.org, the community website of L/L Research.
Gary now serves as Director of L/L Research running and overseeing of the organization alongside the inestimable Austin Bridges. He continues to support and work closely with Jim McCarty, and counts his lucky stars that he has had the profound privilege of friendship and service with Carla and Jim, of working with this philosophy, and of crossing paths with some of the most open-hearted, self-aware, and authentic spiritual seekers on the planet.
Austin Bridges, born in 1987 in New Mexico, found his way to L/L Research by way of many blessings in life. Loving and accepting parents helped provide a sturdy base as the struggle of “fitting in” wore down on him throughout his years of socialization. Austin managed to survive the social waters of public school and made it to the other side somewhat intact, but feeling as lost as any young adult could feel in a world that seemed so strange.
After a few years of bumbling around, he began seeking direction in his early 20s, his eyes turned many a night to gaze upward at the stars and wonder. As that wonder grew, the metaphysical wheels started turning to point him in the right direction. Through a series of so-called “coincidences,” Austin found The Law of One material, a message he later felt that had been calling to him his entire life, though he hadn’t previously recognized or understood that call. An internal gong sounded as he read the words, overpowering the strong skeptic within that wanted to put this crazy book down and just forget about it. The wheels were in motion and could not be stopped. Every word felt as though it were a deep remembering of the fondest memory. The power and meaning that welled up inside as he absorbed the books was undeniable. The spiritual transformation was fast and furious, and for the first time in his life, Austin felt peace thanks to the tools of introspection offered by Ra.
Eventually, he figured out these were more than just books—there was a whole online community around these messages! Eager to join the conversation, Austin started participation on Bring4th and felt right at home. After some time, Austin was offered the opportunity to volunteer as a moderator on the forum, which began his official working relationship with L/L Research. A meeting with the home crew of L/L Research at the 2012 Homecoming created a burst of inspiration which led to an invitation being offered in February of 2013 for Austin to join Gary in the L/L Research office to help manage the organization. He currently serves as Assistant Director, and can’t imagine a greater honor in life.
L/L Research is a collaborative effort that is kept in motion thanks to a network of friends and family from around the world who donate their time, talent, or treasure. Over the course of some years we can work with upwards of 50 volunteers. Some volunteers sign on for a short-term task, some take on a single but enormous long-term task, and many stay with us throughout the years, offering help when and as they are able. Even our staff volunteers their own free time outside of the scheduled work in the office. Indeed, L/L has primarily been a volunteer, labor-of-love service since it was first conceived by Don Elkins and Carla Rueckert in 1970.
L/L Research is extremely blessed in this regard. Our little organization literally could not serve others as it does without the dedication and love of volunteers who wish to assist this particular mission. Many of the services we are able to offer were first proposed by a fellow spiritual seeker.
They are too many wonderful people to name them all here, but we do compile an annual list to say “thank you” that we publish this page.
We offer our heartfelt gratitude to each moment of their volunteer service.
