Avalon Journal

MT’s Log

October 20 to 31, 2004

During this time, MT moved from Avalon to the Magic Kingdom in Louisville and exact records were lost. This is a reconstruction of what happened on Avalon until the end of her stay there, which was over on Halloween.

MT writes that during this time, she:

  • Assisted J in repairing the wood stove chimney pipe system.
  • Repaired front steps and replaced rotted out 4 foot by 8 foot support section under front entrance.
  • Volunteered at Calvary and/or for L/L office work on Wednesdays.
  • Winterized (minimal) the doors and windows of Sugar Shack..
  • Played around the shack garden beds (rose bush, placed freshly washed pretty blue river rocks to outline the beds and made a light trellis to shape the rose bush into a heart as C has been trying to do.)
  • Tended lawn (new growth promoted in shady areas and coming up nicely.)
  • Carved out parking places for Backhoe and other in the upper round area.
  • Received backhoe … in all its glory (note the semi turn-around challenge. He was cheered when he made it!)
  • Finished the nature/foot path system (approx 3 hrs of marked walking and hiking: 4 to 5 trails interconnected and thoughtfully laid out). Put up directional and distance signage (about ten hand-written signs at the various junctions.)
  • Repaired fence line.
  • Kept several appointments with PA (attorney).
  • Drafted legal documents and did research at the PVA office and Co clerk’s records room.
  • Toured partial area surrounding Avalon (G drove, I drew out a map) in an attempt to document area farming and other activity for reasons of water quality and future org certification.
  • Constructed a saw horse out of narrow timbers for big volume processing of 20-30 foot timbers of same dim and length.
  • Hand-cut firewood, replacing over a cord of degraded stock. (for wood stove). Processed most of what J had hauled in from the city.
  • In a creative moment: built a humanoid biped statue out of timbers. At 6 1/2 feet tall it could spook an unaware intruder.
  • Raked the road to remove slick leaf build-up.
  • Patched/filled a pothole in the upper road.
  • Felled a few trees with G and his visiting friends the old-fashioned way (hand saws and axes).
  • Took a few remaining photos (insect collection, a tree or two)—probably a series or two for B as requested.
  • Cleaned cabin in preparation for future overnight visits.
  • Tucked Bertha in for the winter.
  • Did the usual survival stuff (chores, packing down food and water, packing out garbage and laundry …).
  • Packed out personal affairs, now at L/L.
  • B arrived and now the serious work can begin.
  • Had a huge storm just as I was leaving. Took pictures! Saw lots of turtles during the rains.
  • Persevered with testing the well. The state health department’s lab repeatedly failed properly to analyze the drinking well water samples. We finally gave up. But I believe we have a credit for more sampling. Maybe in the spring.

The Avalon Log continues, written by B and V. B moved into a Milton, KY, abode shared with DW on Halloween, and began working daily at Avalon. V is in the process of moving there to assist him in the building work.
